About First Baptist Church
To put on paper the history of a church over one hundred years is an impossible task. Christian history, in reality, is the cumulative experience of many congregations operating in succeeding generations as the body of Christ.
The First Baptist Church of St. Matthews is no exception to the historical process. It is true that we had a beginning, but will have no ending; and the events which have transpired since our beginning can never be fully told until revealed in Glory.
Our church was established on August 8, 1875, in Lewisville, South Carolina on property located on the northeastern corner of West Bridge and Mack Streets under the name of the Lewisville Baptist Church.
Seven devout Christians, believing that there should be a Baptist church in the village, met under an oak tree on property owned by F.M. Prickett Sr., and from this gathering came the genesis of our heritage. The name later became the St. Matthews Baptist Church after the town's name was changed to St. Matthews. Sometime later the name was changed to First Baptist Church.
